Addis Ababa ‘makyato’

Ethiopian MakyatoWe’ve spent the last week settling in Addis Ababa. Coffee is everywhere in Addis, a city with a strong café culture which only seems to be growing stronger.  While many of the espresso machines and drink preparations are Italian in origin, they have been ‘Ethiopianized’ and in our opinion made even better.  The macchiato is a good example.  In Ethiopia spelled ‘makyato’ it is a quintessential Addis Ababa drink and when prepared by a pro is creamy, and rich, a delicate balance of coffee and milk, where the coffee is never, ever overshadowed.  It must be served small and is surprisingly satisfying.

We fell in love with macchiatos at Tamoca in Addis, haven’t found anything since to equal those.

We love Tomoca coffee shop in Addis Ababa too! It’s an institution. We hope to introduce Ethiopian-style macchiato to New York City. Wish us luck!
